Give Kids a Smile

Each February, the American Dental Association sponsors, “Give Kids A Smile” day. We are pleased that this year the Johnson Dental Clinic, located at 505 Woodley Street in Northfield, is partipating in this event. Children 12 and under will receive a free dental exam, cleaning and minor restorative care. The event will be held on Friday, February 3. Appointments are required. Call 645-9669 to schedule an appointment for your child.

The elves of Christmas Sharing are busy preparing for the big day that is only two weeks away! But, there is still time to help by making a donation or bringing a gift. Gifts for teens are especially needed, and monetary contributions are accepted throughout the season. Please join us in making Christmas merry for over 900 children who will be served this year!

Homelessness Summit

On Thursday, November 17 from 2:00 – 4:00, the Rice County Homeless Response Team will sponsor an information session on the realities facing the homeless in our area. This event is part of the nationwide “Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week” that is held each year during the week before Thanksgiving.

In 2010-11, thirty homeless households used the Community Action Center’s emergency shelter program. These households included 19 children. Homelessness in small cities and rural areas is often less visible than in big cities, but the issue exists here too.

The Homelessness Summit will be held at South Central College in Faribault. For more information contact Sue Warring at the Community Action Center or Gina at 507-332-2236.

St Dominic’s Church To Provide Thanksgiving Boxes

Thanks to the generosity of the members of St Dominic’s Church, families using the Food Shelf during the month of October will receive a coupon to be used to receive a box filled with a turkey and other items needed to create a Thanksgiving meal. The Thanksgiving boxes will be distributed during the week of November 21. If you would like to receive this coupon, be sure to use the Food Shelf during October — only these families will be eligible!

Annual Meeting

On September 15 at 7:00 pm the Community Action Center will host its annual meeting. The meeting will be held in the Community Resource Center, Room 103.

The featured speaker will be Joe Selvaggio. Mr. Selvaggio has worked with low-income people for over forty years. He founded Project for Pride in Living and is currently the director of MicroGrants, a non-profit organization that connects the affluent with poor people. The organization offers low-income people grants and mentoring designed to enable them to become self-sufficient.

As summer draws to its end, the women of the Campaign for Children and the staff of the CAC are preparing for Operation Backpack. School supplies will be distributed on August 31. To register, contact the CAC to sign up by August 17.

IBM Donates Children’s Computer

The CAC recently received a “Young Explorer’s” computer through the generosity of IBM. Former IBM employee and CAC volunteer, Larry Walsh, facilitated the donation. The computer is designed for children 3-10 years old to explore the computer with learning activities. Thanks to IBM and Larry Walsh for helping us serve our youngest clients!

Youth Scholarships

In its June 4 edition, the Northfield News highlighted the Northfield Youth Sports Collaborative. The CAC administers these funds, allowing youth from low-income families to participate in local sports activities. Since 2004 over 900 scholarships have been provided!
